How do you calm down and mellow out after a rough or stressful day?

Go for a beer with Lily and the guys. Laugh at Scotty's dumbass. Laugh at Vera's corny jokes. Have a good time and forget the heavy stuff.

Then I go home and see my kid. If she's awake she hugs me and we argue over if she's done her homework/had dinner/fought with Grandma/so on. Then we play a game or read together and I tuck her in for bed. Or if she's already asleep I go in and check on her.

Can't settle down from anything, can't wind down for sleep, til I know my baby's sleeping peacefully. Til I hear her breathing and kiss her cheek. Call me a sap, I don't care.

Coffee this bad could only have been served..

...in times like this. Nearly three AM, in a squad car, in a dark alley. No way coffee could taste good here. Then again – it never tasted better. Kat sighed and leaned her head back against the head rest, still keeping her eyes on the alley.

“Remind me to brew a thermos of the stuff next time,” Kat said quietly.

“Huh?” Vera asked.

“Coffee.”

“Oh.”

She nodded and sighed. Neither of them wanted to be there. They'd been called out four hours before to sit on a suspect...it had not been a fun four hours.

“What were you doin'?” She asked, if only to make conversation.

“Sleeping. You?”

“Playing Monopoly with Veronica and Nate.”

“They getting along?”

“Really well,” Kat nodded.

“That's good. He's a good guy,” Nick said in approval.

“Yea..he really is,” she answered.

“Though he does know he's got me to answer to if he screws up, right?”

Kat looked over at Nick with a small smile and saw his serious face. “He does?”

“Yes,” he gave a single nod.

“You really think you can take him?” She raised a brow slightly and glanced at her partner, then thought of her fit, young, strong boyfriend.

“Oh I know I can.” He held up a fist and flexed a bit. “And if not, I know people.”

She laughed. “You got people?”

“I got people.”

“Your people like doughnuts and coffee as much as you?”

“It's the fuel of real fighters, ma'am,” he said cheesily. She laughed more and shook her head.

“You're a crazy bastard, Vera.” He grinned. She wiped her eyes and tried to calm down. Okay, so maybe steak-outs weren't all bad.

TM 223 - I swear I didn't put those...

confused
Kat walked through the squad room, just returning from lunch, and went over to her desk. There was a smile on her lips that had been hard to shake for a couple months. The reason behind that smile having just met her for lunch, too. She tried to push him out of her mind as she went to her desk. She sat down and opened the folder she'd been scanning earlier in the day and looked around for her pen. With an eyeroll she yanked her desk drawer open to get a new one. People were always stealing pens off each others desks and it was getting so- she froze and stared. She blinked. Her head tilted to the side slightly and slowly a glare came over her face.

On top of everything in that drawer sat a box of condoms and a book entitled, “Safe Sex”.

confused
Kat followed her partner into the building as her cell phone rang. She showed her badge to the security guard as she answered her phone. “Miller.” She followed Nick to the elevator that would take them to their squad room.

“I'm thinkin jumbo shrimp.”

She couldn't help but smile at the voice. “Jumbo shrimp?”

“Yea,” Nate said. “Does Veronica like shrimp?”

“Depends how it's fixed. Why?”

“Dinner. Tonight?”

Kat closed her eyes and stopped in her path. “Dinner. Right.” She sighed and moved to her desk. “Nate...I'm not sure tonight's a good night for dinner.”

“Oh,” he said quietly.

“There's just...a lot going on right now and...it's not the best time.”

“Not the best time for her to meet me?”

“It's not like that,” she said.

“Kat...I know me meeting your daughter's a big deal...but why do you keep putting it off?”

She sighed. “I can't get into this right now, we've got a suspect coming in. Can I call you after work?”

“Fine. Call me.”

“Don't be mad,” she said quietly.

“Not mad, frustrated.”

“I'll talk to you later?”

“Yea, you will.”

Kat sighed as she hung up. She didn't even have time to think over the conversation or everything that had been bothering her about Veronica and Nate meeting. She had to work.

(ooc: Okay, this is where I fix things. Some who know me know I like to throw my own cannon into characters that aren't given much for me to go on. And yes, it's now caught up to me. Since Cold Case finally decided to give us more on Kat, right after I'd committed to a past story line...this is me writing my way out of it. Go with it. Follows 513 - Spiders. No spoilers other than Kat-past stuff.)

Growing up my Mom didn't lie to me. Not that I know of at least. She always told me how it was. She still does that today. I think that's a good way to be a parent, not to lie. Not make your child believe something just because...they are a child.

Guess I'm calling myself a bad parent. )

It was their second date. Or maybe their first? The drinks they'd had the night before had been quite casual and this was different. This was dressing up and meeting for dinner. She wasn't having him pick her up, not yet. There was a distance she had to keep between her daughter and her dates.

She walked through the door of the restaurant and looked around. )

“I'd like to report a robbery.”

Without looking up, Kat pointed to the elevator. “Wrong floor,” she muttered.

“Nah, I'm in the right place. See...this cop...she stole my shirt.” The voice was deep and obviously amused. Kat finally glanced up and stared when she realized it was the paramedic who had lent her that shirt weeks before. He was smiling at her and it was a very addictive smile. Had he been that handsome the night they met? Maybe it was the lighting in the squad. She smiled and chuckled.

I'm not sure how far that claim will go. )

“I'll wait here,” Kat nodded to Vera. He swung around before entering the exhibit room and looked at her.

“What're you talking about Miller? Francine is in here. We need to talk to her,” he waved at the wildlife room.

“And you can speak to her all on your own. Or better yet, bring her out here.” Kat crossed her arms and dropped her weight on her left foot, giving him a set stare. This was her no business stance.

Nick looked at the room behind him and back to Kat. He gave a small smile. “You, ah..scared or something?”

“No. I'm just waiting here. Go on, get Francine.”

Nick chuckled and turned towards the room again. “Lions and tigers and bears, oh my,” he said dryly as he went. Kat glared after him and found a bench to sit on while she waited. Nope. Francine wasn't dangerous enough to make Kat go near that hideously large stuffed Hawk. She shuddered at the thought of the giant bird. Giant birds. She shuddered again.

“You okay?”

Kat leaned back in her chair and looked at her partner, who was watching her. His usual sarcastic gaze was gone and it was replaced with careful concern. She nodded. “Fine.”

“Let's go get a drink. Scotty and Lily are there.”

“No, you go ahead,” she said, stretching her arms above her head. She slowly stood and put her jacket on.

“C'mon, Kat. One drink. Relax and forget.”

“Forget?” She set her eyes on him. “Why should we forget?” )

TM207 - Control

  • Dec. 9th, 2007 at 2:27 PM
close up concerned
Control. Yea, I like to be in control. Not sure if it's got something to do with me being a cop, a girl from Philly, or being my mother's daughter. I like control. And when you're in that room, questioning a perp, you gotta be in control. You let that control slip, you blink, they take it from you. Or worse, when you're on the street. When you're on the street you've got less control already. You can't know what's gonna happen. The environment is out of your hands. Maybe your guy will run – so you gotta be ready to run, too. Maybe your guy will will pull a gun on you – you gotta be ready for that. If you're not...you get shot. Someone else gets shot. And let me tell you, losing control in that moment...it's something you don't forget.

So now? I don't lose control. It's not an option. Not when I'm talking to a perp, not when my partner's giving me a hard time about whatever his current issue is, and not at home either. I'm the cop, I'm the Mom, and - damn right - I'm in control.

TM206 - What do you live for?

  • Nov. 23rd, 2007 at 7:48 PM

I live for my daughter. For every curl on her head and every inch of her gorgeous skin. I live for her love of dance, for her silly jokes, and her laughter. I live to watch her grow up and become a woman. To see her fall in love, maybe get married, and have her own children. I live to hold her in my arms the first time her heart is broken, and to race her through the park on Rollerblades. To pick the pepperonis off of her pizza, because she likes the juices of it but not the actual pepperoni. To every fight we have, because it only makes us stronger. I live for her hand slipping into mine as we walk down the sidewalk, and her fascination with the work I do – the need to understand it. For those moments I look at her and see her Daddy. I live for the air in her lungs and the beat of her heart. I live for her and I'd die for her.

Well, it was bound to happen. Due to fighting and bad handling, the government of the United States has been overthrown. Congress has been dissolved, and YOU have been made the all powerful ruler of the USA. You are the absolute, but much loved, dictator of the country and all of its resources. You must now select a cabinet. Secretary of Defense, Treasury, State, Interior, Education and one other department that you create. Who do you pick? What is your first act as ruler?

Oh yea, baby, this sounds good. I could live with this. ::laughs:: Okay, okay let's get this thing started.. )
